Frustratingly slippery
Padding: 5 stars. The mat is thick and provides an excellent amount of cushioning. You should never need to fold it.
Traction: 1 star. The mat provides excellent traction... until you start to sweat. I've read elsewhere that this is supposed to improve as the mat is broken in, but how long is that supposed to take? I've tried accelerating the break-in through washing and scrubbing (as recommended in the included instructions), but I haven't observed even the slightest improvement in traction while wet over the weeks that I've been using the mat. Just how long am I expected to slip and slide through my workouts?
I currently work around the traction issue by placing towels where I set my hands and feet. The towels still shift and bunch up, though, which forces me to stop and reset them numerous times over the course of a workout. Maybe wearing socks and gloves would work better, but I'm not thrilled with the idea.
Great mat
After years of cheaper mats, I splurged on this Manduka mat. It is plenty big, and OH so easy on the knees. Great mat!
Excellent mat. Love the length.
As others have said, this is a great mat. The 1/4" pad thickness is perfect and, while heavy, it is easy enough to move around, and the lifetime warranty is a plus, though I doubt I'll ever have to take advantage of it. For me, what sets this mat apart is its length. I'm not 85" tall (73" in fact), but really appreciate that the extra length means that I no longer find myself extending my legs or arms off the mat. I'm always on it and I like that feeling and the associated comfort. If there is a negative, it is the paucity of choices for mat towels. Manduka only has two and neither is a particularly interesting color.
